Being healthy has a different definition for everyone. But we think that keeping a good balance of being physically well and being happy is important in life and work! You may have never thought about the fact that your health as an employee can directly affect your customers and their experience with your company.

When you’re in a good headspace and feel energized physically, you’re more likely to be productive and excel at work. We’ve all experienced the times at work when we are just having a good day – enjoying the day’s workflow, feeling excited and energized, not tired, unhappy, and uninspired. And we know that this will transmit to your customers (and coworkers!) too, giving them a positive experience when working with you.

However, did you know that prioritizing your physical and mental health can help you have more of these good days? You can directly affect your work and your customer’s experience with you by simply trying to be the healthiest you!

There are so many reasons to want to live a healthy life and the decision to change your lifestyle likely came to you outside of work. But having good health practices at work is just as important because these changes will affect your time spent on the job and those around you.

Things like eating well, exercising regularly, going to annual check-ups, and therapy can help you feel ready to take on your workday when you enter the office. However, if you’re just beginning your journey in wellness, these things may seem daunting.

For some people, making small changes to your workday is a great way to kickstart your healthier lifestyle. Plus, the steps you take during the day can help you do your job efficiently, stay motivated at work, and keep your customers happy.

#1. Move more.

Working at an office all day usually means a lot of sitting. Sitting at a desk has been proven to have detrimental effects on the body, including poor posture and even being linked to diseases like diabetes. There are plenty of ways you can achieve more movement throughout your day but first, try setting a goal for yourself.

Maybe it’s to hit 10,000 steps a day or take a 20-minute walk daily; setting effective goals makes it easier to stick with what you’re striving for. To move more you can try taking the stairs instead of the elevator, get a standing desk, or go for a walk on your lunch break.

Along with sitting at your desk all day, you’re likely looking at your computer screen. Did you know that the light coming off of your screen can actually cause symptoms like headaches and dry eyes?

Blue light can damage the cells in your eyes because your eyes aren’t naturally well-equipped to block the high-energy blue light that comes off of your screen. The best way to help reduce the strain on your eyes to avoid these symptoms is to ensure that the brightness of your screen is close to the brightness in the room you’re in.

If you have a bright, naturally lit office then feel free to have your screen brightness high, but if you’re in a dark or dim room, then be sure to keep the brightness down. If you want even more protection then opt for a pair of glasses that filter blue light because these help stop the light from reaching your eyes.

#3. Have good mental health tools.

There’s no denying that work causes a lot of stress for people. Being able to properly manage stress inside and outside of work can make you excel at your job, which means knowing and using the mental health tools that work best for yourself.

Seeing a mental health professional regularly is important to identify the tools that you will need to manage stress and anxiety. Then, when you feel particularly stressed you will be able to meditate, do breathing exercises, or anything else they recommend to help feel your best. It’s also important to remember that taking time off from work is necessary to do your job effectively and to keep your mind in a healthy space.

So don’t let those PTO days go to waste and use them up to get a well-deserved break from work! When you feel calm and content you will be able to do your job to the best of your ability and ensure your customers are happy too.

#4. Create a comfortable workspace.

Comfort comes from feeling physically and mentally content and at ease. Keep things in your office or cubicle that make you feel happy and at home. This may be extra ergonomic support for personalized comfort, like the standing desk mentioned above or a pillow on the back of your chair.

However, this also means surrounding yourself with plants that cleanse the air, photos of people and places that make you happy and keeping personal work achievements on display. All of these personal touches can help keep you in a calm mental space at work.
